Bowden Battery, Plymouth
Bowden Battery is one of the 11 forts to the north of Plymouth. Like the Portsdown line at Portsmouth, these fortifications were built to protect Plymouth from a land-side attack.
Bowden Battery is now known as Plymouth Garden Centre ! The author has not been able to see the condition of the inside of the fort so if anyone has any pictures we would be grateful for copies of them.
The other 10 forts in the line were Ernsettle Fort, Agaton Fort, Knowles Battery, Woodlands Fort, Crownhill Fort, Egg Buckland Keep, Forder Battery, Austin Fort, Fort Efford and Laira Battery.
Crownhill Fort is run by the Landmark Trust and is open to the public. Well worth a visit.
